Portia Lee James DeGeneres, who is professionally known by the pseudonym Portia de Rossi, is an Australian-American model, actor, and philanthropist. The name she changed was legally registered in the year 15years old, adopting the name of 'Portia' which comes from the Shakespearean performance 'The Merchant from Venice'. She then adopted the Italian de Rossi name which she considered to be beautiful. Portia thinks that this was the most courageous thing she has ever done and stated that the urgency to alter her name was driven by her personal struggle with her sexual identity. Portia began her journey in film by appearing in the romantic comedy drama "Sirens," which featured Hugh Grant. Portia is a star in numerous American TV films, including 'Too Something', 'Nick Freno's Licensed Teacher', Arrested Development', and Better Off Ted.
